Randy Shilts seeks interviews for book on gays in the military

Best-selling author Randy Shilts is seeking interviews with lesbian and gay military personnel for a new book which will survey the experiences of gay men and lesbians in the armed forces.

Shilts, a national correspondent for the San Francisco Chronicle, is author of The Mayor of Castro Street: The Life and Times of Harvey Milk, and And the Band Played On: Politics, People & The AIDS Epidemic, which has been translated into six languages.

"After the success of Band, a lot of people said I shouldn't write about gay topics anymore, but as I look around at society, it still strikes me that anti-gay prejudice is one of the great wrongs that continues in America-I must write about

it," said Shilts. "I can't think of an issue that more clearly illustrates the human damage created by prejudice than what goes on in the military."

Shilts' new book will focus primarily on gay men and lesbians in the military since 1969, starting with the Vietnam War. However, he is interested in interviewing men and women who have served in the armed forces at any time during this century, particularly, he stresses, "if they have a good story that needs to be told."

"There have to be gay astronauts, generals, admirals, war heroes, Congressional Medal of Honor winners, the whole gamut of excellence that our community is capable of. I need to find these people and

document their stories, for everybody's sake."

Home Box Office announced last month that it is making a miniseries based on And The Band Played On. Oscar-winning film director Oliver Stone has recently signed on at Warner Brothers to co-produce a film version of The Mayor of Castro Street. Shilts will protect the confidentiality of

interviewees who do not want their names used. If you are interested in providing information for his project, write him at the San Francisco Chronicle, 901 Mission Street, San Francisco, 94103 or leave a message on his voice mail at 415-7777220.▼

'In Search of Gay America'and Eighty-Sixed' win book awards

The Social Responsibilities Round Table of the American Library Association has announced the 1990 recipients of its Gay and Lesbian Book Award. Neil Miller's In Search of Gay America: Women and Men in the Time of Change has won in the nonfiction category, and Eighty-Sixed by David B. Feinberg received the award for fiction.

The finalists for the 1990 Gay and Lesbian Book Award were selected from a total of 26 nominated titles published in 1989. The award is given each year to books of exceptional merit relating to the gay and lesbian experience. This year marks the first time that awards in two categoriesliterature and nonfiction— have been presented.

"In Search of Gay America was chosen for its insightful, illuminating and entertaining portrayal of the richness and diversity of gay and lesbian life in America today," said award jury chair Adam L. Schiff, assistant science librarian of the University of Colorado at Boulder. "Miller, a prize-winning journalist, traveled throughout the United States-to gain a perspec-

tive on what it means to be gay in America in the late 1980's. His 'book of reportage' relates, through interviews, the day-today experiences and the changes in attitudes and behavior that are shaping the gay community today."

Eighty-Sixed is Feinberg's first novel. "It was chosen for its witty, honest depiction of gay urban life before and after AIDS as told through the eyes and experiences of a memorable character, B. J. Rosenthal," said Shiff.

Author Armistead Maupin received a special Gay and Lesbian Task Force Award for Exceptional Achievement in Literature. The award, given this year for the first time, recognizes outstanding accomplishments in writing, publishing, bookselling or librarianship.

"Maupin was chosen for his achievement in writing the Tales of the City series of novels, which represent a significant literary milestone in gay and lesbian publishing deserving of special recognition," according to Schiff. ▼
